Lebanon: After Ethiopian Domestic Workers, a Sit-in by Kenyan Workers Demanding their Repatriation

The Kenyan Consulate in Beirut witnessed a sit-in by a number of Kenyan domestic workers demanding to secure their return to their country after running out of options in light of the tense economic situation that Lebanon has been experiencing for a year, which was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and recently by the huge explosion that occurred in the port of Beirut.

The Ministry of Labor issued a statement saying that: “A number of female domestic workers of Kenyan nationality carried out a sit-in in front of their country’s consulate in Beirut, demanding to secure their return to their country”.

The statement added that the Ministry of Labor is following up the case in coordination with the Kenyan consul and the humanitarian organizations that are concerned with foreign workers’ cases.

The statement was concluded by referring to a coordination meeting that will tackle the effective solutions needed to ensure that workers could leave to Kenya after the completion of all needed procedures to obtain the dues they have with their employers.
