Tunisia: Towards a Legislative Framework to Regulate Domestic Workers Sector

The Ministry of Women, Family, Childhood and Elderly in Tunisia announced the formation of a creative committee to draft a law regulating the activity of domestic workers, with the participation of representatives of public structures and national professional organizations.

This initiative is in line with the provisions of Article 40 of the Tunisian Constitution related to the right to work in decent conditions and with a fair wage, and an answer to the violations and abuses witnessed by the workers of this sector, especially during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

This law will represent a gateway to protecting domestic workers’ right to decent work in accordance with the constitution and in line with the ratified international standards.

It was reported that the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT by its French acronym) is in the process of implementing a program aimed at ensuring decent work for domestic workers and in order to ratify the International Labor Convention No. 189 related to the regulation of the status of this category of workers.
