Sudan’s Railroad workers entered a mass sit-in, last Wednesday, in each of the presidency and the five regions. The Steering Committee of the General Trade Union of the Authority issued a statement announcing the sit-in and called on workers and employees to adhere to the times of attendance without performing any work.
The committee also announced the suspension of the movement of the train tracks in all parts of Sudan including Khartoum’s internal trains.
The union attributed the matter to the failure of the Finance Ministry to fulfill its obligations towards the railway workers
A member of the Steering Committee of the General Union of the Authority described the general situation in the Authority as complicated and said that the Authority is facing many problems relating to administrative weakness, weak supervision and the misuse of available resources.
The member noted as well that the sit-in will continue for more than 48 hours which means that it will turn into a strike, which puts the Authority face to face with many problems.
He also pointed out to the suffering of workers during the Eid holidays because they did not receive their July salaries and Eid grants similar to workers in other institutions, in addition to the accumulation of the debts of workers in the railway administration due to overtime hours pay.
