Libya: Violations Against Migrants in the City of Zintan

According to testimonies reported by the migration-focused news site migantnews.net, some migrants who were detained in a center in the city of Zintan stated that this center was subjected to an armed attack on Monday.

According to these testimonies, the militants attempted to kidnap migrants from the facility, with the aim of abusing and torturing them.

A spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Safa Msihli, confirmed to the same source the incident, stating that an unknown armed group opened fire on the guards of the center and tried to barge into it.

The information we have available confirm that there were no injuries, but the experience was traumatizing for the migrants present at the center at the time of the incident, noted Msihli.

The latest United Nations census indeed confirm that there are approximately 500 migrants inside the Zintan Center, who are living under difficult circumstances.

As described by a lawyer specializing in human rights issues, the conditions inside the detention center are very difficult to live under and the center’s director told the migrants there that the guards were no longer able to protect them, asking them to get in touch with NGOs and the United Nations instead, in order to move them from there quickly.
