ILO: New Report on the Situation of Workers in the Middle East During the Pandemic

In a new report, the International Labor Organization (ILO) confirmed that cases of ill-treatment of domestic workers in the Middle East continued during the pandemic period.

ILO confirmed that many of these workers, especially those who do not have a work contract, and live outside the home of the family for which they work, have been severely affected by the pandemic.

The report said that many migrant workers have lost their income and livelihoods, as employers have told them that their services are no longer necessary, due to fears of the spread of the pandemic, and as a result, they struggled to pay for food and rent, and depended on humanitarian aid and the support of community networks.

The report indicated that there are signs of improvement in some countries, but there is still much that could be done at the international level: “The ILO encourages the ratification of the Domestic Workers Convention, which establishes the basis for the minimum treatment that should be given to all domestic workers, regardless of nationality or migration status. Until now, it has not been ratified by any country in the Middle East”.
