International Labor Organization (ILO) Convention No.182 relating the worst forms of child labor achieved a comprehensive consensus after the ratification of the Kingdom of Tonga of the convention.
Ambassador of the Kingdom of Tonga to the ILO, Titelope Vanitopovavahau Toifakano, deposited the relevant instruments to ILO Director-General Guy Ryder on 4 August 2020.
This agreement is the fastest in the history of the organization in terms of ratification, as it was adopted by the International Labor Conference 21 years ago.
“The universal ratification of Convention 182 is a historic event because it means that all children now possess and enjoy legal protection from the worst forms of child labor”, said ILO Director-General Ryder. “Children in armed conflict regions, and other unlawful or dangerous acts that are harmful to children’s health, morals, or psychological well-being”, added Ryder in the same statement.
Sharan Burrow, Secretary General of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), welcomed this ratification noting that: “The world’s ratification of Convention 182 represents a strong and timely reminder of the importance of ILO standards and the need to find multilateral solutions to global problems. Child labor is a serious violation of basic rights, and ILO members as well as the international community must ensure that this convention is fully implemented, including the level of adherence to legal standards in global supply chains”.
According to ILO’s estimates, there are 152 million child workers, 73 million of whom within hazardous work conditions. 70 % of all children work in agriculture, mostly because of poverty and the difficulties for parents to get decent jobs.
