Morocco: Moroccan Labor Union Calls for the Reopening of the Safi Fish Processing Factories

The Moroccan Labor Union (UMT by its French acronym) sent a message to the Moroccan Interior Minister to demand the reopening of the Safi fish processing laboratories, after being closed following the spread of the Coronavirus among its workers, due to the implications of the closure on the conditions of its employees.

The text of the correspondence highlighted that approximately 12.000 workers are in difficult situations due to the closure of 18 production units.

UMT stressed that insofar as it shares the authorities with all preventive precautionary decisions to limit the spread of the virus, cannot remain silent in the face of the suffering of workers in this region and the deterioration of their social conditions.

Within the same context, UMT called for giving instructions to the authorities in charge in order to reopen these production units, taking all necessary measures to protect the safety and health of workers in this sector.

Thousands of these workers were affected by this closure due to their fragile socio-economic situations.

UMT stressed that, as much as it insists on restarting these factories to save the workers who found themselves caught up in such difficult circumstances, in order to meet the costs of life and of Eid al-Adha as well as the new school year entry expenses, as much as it is also concerned to ensure the health and safety of the working class in the region.
