The Mexican film director, who is a three-time Oscar winner, Alfonso Cuaron, has announced a campaign to ensure that thousands of domestic workers who were laid off during the COVID-19 pandemic continue to receive their salaries.
“We, as employers, have a responsibility to pay their salaries in this difficult time”, said Quaron, 58, who won an Oscar for Best Director at the 2019 Academy Awards for the film “Roma”.
“The goal of this campaign is to remind us of the importance of caring for the women who care about us and the respect what these workers deserve”, he added.
Cuaron, whose film highlighted domestic workers in Latin America, weighed heavily behind a campaign by the Domestic Workers Support and Training Center.
The organization said that most of the 2.3 million Mexican domestic workers do not have social security and cannot obtain financial assistance during the emerging Coronavirus crisis.
