Iraq: Health Personnel on Strike in Sulaymaniyah

Medical and health personnel in the Iraqi Sulaymaniyah governorate went on a mass strike last Monday. They abstained from working in hospitals and health centers due to not receiving their monthly salaries.

“The health and medical personnel in Sulaymaniyah have decided to strike and stop work due to the non-payment of their salaries by the territorial government, despite the fact that they have played a tremendous role in countering the Coronavirus”, said Hawassin Othman, head of the Health Professions Syndicate, in a press interview.

Othman added that “health personnel in Sulaymaniyah recorded 199 cases of coronavirus infection among doctors, nurses and other workers in the health sector, but the provincial government did not appreciate this effort.”

Witnesses told us that “many hospitals failed to receive patients, while private hospitals suffering due to Coronavirus impact are suffering from a shortage of health personnel due to doctors and health personnel strike.”

Media and bloggers have warned that next week could witness a health disaster in Sulaymaniyah if the current situation continues without any governmental intervention to pay health workers’ salaries and to accord attention to the situation inside the city.
