Morocco: The General Moroccan Contracting Union Provoking Trade Unions

The General Moroccan Contracting Association (EO) is preparing to apply for a delay in the increase in the minimum wage that was to come into effect in July 2020 in accordance with the tripartite agreement signed in April 2019.

During its participation in a digital seminar, the President of the Contracting Association stated that the current circumstance related to the pandemic does not allow raising the minimum wage, and it is clear that we will ask to postpone the application of the increase, especially as it is related to other obligations that the state must undertake.

In the first trade union comment on these statements, El-Miloudi El-Moukhark, Secretary-General of the Moroccan Labor Union, declared that the statement of the President of the General Union of Moroccan Enterprises was “provocative and unacceptable and would cast large groups of workers into poverty and fragility”.

“It would have been better for the union to think about other measures that do not affect wages, and to carry out prior consultations with the unions that represent workers in the private sector”

El-Moukhark also considered that “these positions have no meaning in the current circumstance, yes we understand the conditions twhich Moroccan enterprises are going through and we are in favor of relaunching the national economy, but not at the expense of workers’ wages”.

All data indicated that the upcoming period foretells of frequent conflicts between trade unions and the employers’ organization due to the unilateral initiatives of the latter.
