Tunisia / Follow-up: Success of Public Health Sector General Strike

Thousands of public health workers in Tunisia carried out a general strike, last Thursday, called on for by the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT by its French acronym), to demand the adoption of a legislation to regulate their work and the demarcation of contractors and workers, in appreciation of their efforts in tackling the outbreak of the Coronavirus, warning of potential escalation in protests in case they are faced by the rejection of Tunisian government.

Protesters gathered in front of the headquarters of the Ministry of Health in the capital Tunis and organized a protest to denounce what they called “procrastination” from the authorities in responding to their demands.

In a radio statement, the President of UGTT’s General Syndicate of Public Health of accused the government of “delaying the right decision regarding the rights of workers in the health sector.”

In many other cities such as Sfax, Sousse, Kebili and Sidi Bouzid, hundreds of angry people also gathered in front of UGTT’s headquarters and organized rallies, to demand the approval of the Basic Law and the revision of Article 2 of the civil service, which stipulates taking into account the specificity of work in specific sectors, to include the health sector as well as to implement previously-signed agreements between the Health Syndicate and the ministry.

It is noteworthy that the public health sector in Tunisia employs more than 60.000 people, including doctors, nurses, nursing aides, employees and workers.
