In defiance of the Egyptian labor law and in underestimation of the measures taken by the Egyptian government to tackle the Coronavirus, Unionaire, the air conditioner maker, suddenly and arbitrarily, fired 250 workers.
The expelled workers were surprised by the decision, which hanged on the company’s billboards after unsuccessful attempts to force them to sign their resignations in exchange for a month’s salary as a severance pay.
It is important ton note that this company have recorded, since its erection in Egypt, multiple labor disputes. The most famous of which is the protest of nearly 2000 of its workers in front of the Egyptian parliament in 2018 to demand the application of the law and the respect the fundamental rights of workers.
Since the beginning of May, Egypt has witnessed a wave of layoffs and arbitrary dismissals of workers in a number of private sector enterprises without any legal underpinning.
