Morocco’s Public Prosecution announced the registration of 892 complaints related to forms of violence against women during the quarantine period, whether it was physical, sexual, economic or psychological, 148 of which the prosecution decided to refer to the judiciary.
Violence against women became a key issue during the Moroccan Parliament’s work, after a female MP submitted a written question to the Prime Minister about cases of violence against women during quarantine, pointing to hundreds of other cases that were not reported under pressure of fear or maintaining family stability.
The relevant MP demanded to widen the hearing platforms, accept complaints remotely and refer them to the Public Prosecution in order to lessen the burden of transportation that victims of violence have to endure to physically submit their pleas to courts and police stations at a time when Morocco is witnessing measures that prevent freedom of movement.
It is important to note that the cities of Tan-Tan and Agadir launched platforms to accept complaints and report cases of violence remotely to spare the victims the burden of movement.
