Mauritania: ‘Tazbazet’ Company Workers in Open Strike

Workers of the Mauritanian ‘Tazbazet’ company affirmed the continuation of their open strike since May 5 in defence of equality between Mauritanian workers and foreigners.

Going on the reasons for the strike, the workers accused the company’s management of violating the collective agreement signed in 2019 and committing violations that resulted in increasing overtime and keeping workers inside the mines for 6 consecutive weeks.

Although workers maintained a dialogue approach to resolve outstanding issues and build a trusting relationship with the administration, the policy of ignoring and procrastinating forced the workers to go into an open strike while keeping three teams outside the strike to secure the minimum necessary services for the company in a step that reflects the goodwill of the workers.

In its response to workers’ demands and damages, the company’s management attributed the fact that long-term workers remain in mines due to the measures taken to prevent coronavirus spread and reduce movement to protect workers from infection.

The company did not provide answers about its breach of the collective agreement signed with workers in 2019 and the increase in additional working hours.
