Mauritania: Sailors File a Complaint to the President of the Republic

A group of Mauritanian sailors filed a complaint to the President of the Republic, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, because of what they considered to be a wage discrimination between them and foreign sailors.

In a letter signed by this group, the sailors revealed that their salaries do not exceed 6500 ouguiya, which is equivalent to 172 dollars, compared to 1500 dollars for foreign sailors.

The complaint revealed that the matter does not stop at the vast difference in salaries, but rather extends to foreign sailors obtaining specific percentages of production.

Although the problem was previously presented to the Minister of Fishing and Maritime Economy and it then pledged to solve the problem, the situation remained the same.

The letter did not contain a warning about the possibility of going into a general strike if the same situation continued.

It is important to note that the income of marine fishing in Mauritania reached an average of $ 220 million in 2019, and this sector is considered to have a high operational capacity with nearly 75.000 workers in 2019.
