Jordan: Government Allows the Reduction Private Sector Wages

The Jordanian government allowed private sector institutions to reduce the salaries of nearly 100.000 employees due to the economic implications of COVID-19.

The Jordanian Minister of Labor announced in a press statement that the “protection” platform of the Ministry of Labor received 3.704 requests from establishments to reduce the wages of 124.000 workers, and indicated in this regard that the ministry agreed to the requests of 3443 establishments while it rejected the request of 261 other establishments for various reasons.

The Ministry of Labor is currently studying requests to suspend the activities of 45 establishments that employ nearly 1000 workers.

The statement noted that the ministry will stop accepting all requests once institutions return workers to their full time and productive capacity.

It is noteworthy that 197 Jordanian establishments operating in the private sector announced the suspension of their activities since the beginning of the Corona crisis.
