Egypt : 21 Closed Factories in the Free Zone Due to Coronavirus Outbreak

Magdy Kamal, director of the Port Said Free Zone Investors Association, said that 21 factories in the Port Said Free Public Investment Free Zone suspended work until mid-April, in anticipation of the precautionary measures taken by the government to combat the Coronavirus.

He explained that the factories stopped completely from 1 to 15 of this month until further notice, given that foreign workers from other provinces are prevented from entering the region to avoid overcrowding and reduce density inside the factories in conjunction with the decline in export requests abroad.

Kamal revealed in press statements that only six factories out of a total of 27 factories in the public free zone with investment are still operating at about 15% of their capacity, after granting foreign workers from the neighboring governorates open leave within the precautionary measures to confront Corona, pointing out that some of the factories operate with more than 4000 foreign workers, thus their absence affects production stages and leads to factory delays in meeting customers’ demands.

In a related context, the Association of Young Businessmen in South Port Said decided to suspend the work of all foreign workers from the neighboring governorates with a total of 350 workers in the first industrial complex (58 factories) until April 14.

Amr Shiha, the association’s board chairman and owner of a shoe factory in the complex, said that the association notified the workers of the factories of the people of Port Said of the obligation to attend daily until the developments of the current situation, as well as taking the precautions of the factory owners in terms of adherence to the general rules of hygiene, sterilization and disinfection.
