UGTT Postpones Strikes and Calls for Tackling the Monopoly of Medicines and Food Due to Corona Virus Outbreak

Secretary-General Noureddine Taboubi announced that, due to the difficult circumstances the country is going through, which requires national solidarity, support and unity, the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT) decided to postpone all protests, strikes, seminars and public meetings.

This announcement was made during the commemoration of the 21st anniversary of the death of national trade union leader El Habib Ashour the day before yesterday, on the island of Kerkennah, in Sfax Governorate.

UGTT’s official Facebook page stated that the Secretary-General wanted to remind people of the national role of UGTT in working in all the ordeals that Tunisia goes through and the need of all men and women to stand together for their country.

These are principles that UGTT built through all stages of its history thanks to great leaders that served the country and put national interest as a priority.

Taboubi also paid tribute to all the medical and paramedical staff that are the front row of defence of the immunity and health of Tunisians, recalling the organization's awareness-raising campaigns to support the public health sector over recent years because it is certain that when met with such challenges the public health system will be the front, calling on all Tunisians to be more vigilant and synergized until the eradication of the Corona epidemic.

It is also worth noting that UGTT called on the authorities to confront all smuggling and monopoly of goods, medicines and foodstuffs that are active in crisis situations and take advantage of citizens’ fear due to a lack of supply of markets for illicit enrichment and investment in tragedies and crises.
