The Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development Launches an Athletic Initiative in Support of Syrian Refugees in Jordan

The Italian Agency for Development and Cooperation, the Association of Italian Football Players and the non-governmental AFCI Foundation for Human Development launched the “Young Leaders Football” initiative to support Syrian refugees and their host communities in Jordan, and to promote inclusion and provide psychological and physical well-being for refugees.

Two players from the Italian Roma team, Damiano Tommasi and Simone Perrotta, are participating in this initiative.

The initiative aims to support Syrian refugees and their host communities, and to promote inclusion and provide psychological and physical well-being for young adults and adults, considering their difficult living conditions.

“This project is very important, because we can use sport as a motive for growth for all of us, adults or children, and in particular as a tool to break down barriers,” said Tomasi, president of the Italian Footballers' Association.

“In this region, there is a possibility to help both the Syrians and the Jordanian population to escape from the grip of poverty, and these activities that we launched are proof of that,” said the Secretary-General of the Afsi Foundation.

The Afsi Foundation is implementing the “AMAN” project in Jordan with support from the Italian Development Cooperation Agency, to help the most vulnerable individuals.

FCI projects are in line with the Italian Footballers’ Association, which organizes sports activities in difficult contexts.

These activities are part of this project thanks to the training of local trainers and not just players, it also creates an opportunity for growth and education for the participating youth and help them develop skills that are beneficial to their future.

The initiative that was launched last Tuesday is the first, after signing a memorandum of understanding by the Italian Foreign Minister a few days ago, to promote sporting principles and values, especially in football, in the context of cooperation with the Italian Footballers’ Association and the AFCI.
