Bahrain: The General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions Reaffirms its Commitment to Workers Rights in its 4th Assembly

The Secretary General of the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions Hassan Al-Halwashi stressed that the past four years, the Federation did not go on a paved road, but during that many challenges and issues such as arbitrary dismissal and issues of disruption of wages and issues of marginalizing the union work have emerged, either through stopping collective bargaining operations or retreating on the signed negotiating mechanisms, stopping the automatic deduction of trade union contributions, looting of trade union headquarters, or interference with the independence of trade union work, and other difficulties and obstacles.

Al-Halwashi highlighted during his speech at the opening of the fourth general assembly of the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions the day before yesterday, that the situation was not all dark, as the union was able to end many of the troublesome files, and the trade unions in many areas were able to achieve great achievements for the benefit of their workers at the level of rewards, wages and allowances, the return of some of those dismissed, the easing of sanctions and others.

The Secretary General also addressed axes related to the most important issues that constitute major files for the labor and trade union class, such as the issue of resettlement and Bahrainization, issues of migrant workers, the issue of social insurance, the position of the labor unit, the future of work, the developments of the health situation and the position of the so-called century deal.

Al-Halwashi noted that efending the rights of workers is a principle and Bahrainization is a goal and does not contradict their own principles and goals.

“It is never acceptable that the percentage of Bahraini workers out of the total workers in the Kingdom is only 20%.” Said Al-Halwashi.

The Secretary General also stressed that the General Union does not have the slightest willingness to sacrifice the rights of the migrant worker under any title, and as soon as the migrant worker wears his/her uniform and signs his/her contract of employment, the protection of his/her rights and dignity becomes a major goal of the union that can never be revoked, again rejecting any amendment to the social insurance law , pointing to systematic errors in the management of social insurance funds.
