Sudan: Strike by Bus Drivers in Khartoum Land Port

Bus drivers at the port of Khartoum have been on strike since last Saturday to protest against the failure to respond to their demands.

Thousands of travellers gathered outside the wild port fence in Khartoum. Companie’ efforts to dissuade drivers from the strike that paralyzed flights failed, according to press reports.

The strike included all Sudanese cities, and thousands were unable to move between the governorates and the capital, while minibuses that did not meet travel standards were presented as alternatives to take advantage of the strike crisis, which poses additional risks for travellers.

The protesters demanded the provision of salaries and incentives, the formation of management committees for union action, the issuance of health insurance and social security cards, and the control of fuel at the stations. The protesters also expressed their rejection of the spread of bribery by national methods.

The crisis of the road transport sector has been accumulating for years, especially after the Land Transport Union had a 15% increase on tickets last August, while the Ministry of Infrastructure and Land Transport Administration failed to find radical solutions in light of the scarcity of currencies, high transportation costs, spare parts and fuel, and high inflation.
