On Wednesday, 4 March, the UNRWA Workers Trade Union in the Gaza Strip announced the start of “labor disputes” procedures with the UNRWA administration in the Gaza Strip in accordance with the Unions Law, so that all the fair demands of the employees that called for the union to achieve throughout the last period.
According to the Union’s president, Amir Al-Mashal, in a press conference held at UNRWA headquarters in Gaza that “the reduction in the agency’s services and the failure of donor countries to respond to the needs of UNRWA is a dangerous bell threatening their existence and raising risks for a humanitarian crisis in all areas of operations,” appealing to “all countries of the world that have supported UNRWA, standing by her side and providing financial and political support and assistance, to enable it to carry out its humanitarian duties towards more than one million and 400 thousand Palestinian refugees in the Gaza Strip.
Al- Mashal demanded that the UNRWA administration in Gaza refrain from the recent cuts, which are estimated in Gaza at about 10% of the budget, or 23 million dollars, which will directly affect employment and the quality of service provided to Palestinian refugees, explaining that the Union rejects the agency's administration's failure to send A daily employee is an alternative to the authorized employee for any legal reason and for any period less than two weeks, which leads to a lack of quality in services and chaos in institutions, especially schools and clinics.
The Union confirmed that it will have subsequent escalation measures in this aspect, which will be published and clarified in a detailed statement later.
Al-Mashal also called for “the UNRWA administration in Gaza to return all those who were fired, who were the victim of unjust decisions taken against them under false pretenses.”
He noted that “the sit-in tent of the dismissed colleagues will continue every Wednesday, in expression of their rejection of the unjust decision until their return and enabling them to lead a decent life”, adding that “the agency management must respect the agreements signed with the staff union during the past years, whether related to emergencies or temporary contracts.
