On the evening of Tuesday, February 18, the “Ocean Viking” ship carried out a rescue operation of 98 migrants who were on board a sinking boat.
The rescue of these migrants came after the ship's crew carried out another rescue operation of 84 migrants a few hours ago, off the Libyan coasts.
Doctors Without Borders said in a tweet that the rescue crew of the “Ocean Viking”, which operates in the Mediterranean under its management together with “SOS Mediterane”, carried out a second rescue operation on Tuesday evening of 98 migrants who were on a shabby rubber boat.
The organization added that the rescue operation occured just before the deteriorating weather conditions in the region, and that all migrants are in good health and are currently on board.
“Rescue call” organization, which deals with receiving calls for help from migrants in the Mediterranean, said in a tweet that it had received an appeal from migrants on the boat stating that their condition had deteriorated and that the boat was about to sink.
The organization informed the relevant authorities of the status and location of the boat, before “Ocean Viking” intervened and carried out the rescue operation.
“Rescue Call” also added that the migrants expressed their determination to reach Europe and not return to Libya, “They said they would prefer suicide than returning to Libya”.
The ship had carried out a rescue operation earlier on Tuesday, in which 84 migrants aboard a wooden boat off the Libyan coast were recovered, hence a total of 182 migrants are waiting on board waiting for a safe harbor to give them a positive response to land.
