Italian Police Arrest Libyan for Torture Charges

Italian police arrested a Libyan named Al-Hasiri Masoud, 37, on charges of torturing migrants and committing criminal acts in the context of irregular migration in a Libyan detention center before he came to Italy.

Before his arrest, Al-Hasiri had been living in an Italian hosting center since last November, and he was arrested after he was identified by a young Somali who was one of his victims.

The police forces, in coordination with the investigators of combating organized crime in the city of “Catanzaro” in the “Calabria” region, arrested the Libyan citizen, who had been living in the “Isola Capo Risotto” hosting center near “Catanzaro” since November.

According to Migrant News, Al-Hasiri has applied for international protection.

The man is currently facing charges of criminal acts related to irregular migration, and he is also accused of torturing migrants along with other people who have been identified by investigators.

The Somali youth who was rescued at the end of January by the Ocean Viking ship with several other people, who were transported to “Taranto” in the region of “Puglia”, told the police that the accused was known as “Peter the Leader” in the Al-Libi camp.

According to the youth’s statement, Al-Hasiri beat and tortured detainees with the aim of obtaining funds and maintaining order in the facility, where migrants were held before being allowed to board boats to Italy.
