According to a new investigative, a migrants’ center funded by the European Union is witnessing tragic situations in which migrants residing in it are being subjected to torture.
The "Muhajir News" website revealed stories of refugees who suffered racism, torture and sexual abuse in the shelter.
Another investigative report by the German channel "ARD", entitled "Panorama", showcased that the conditions in the "gathering and departure" center, which is funded by the European Union and run by the UNHCR in Libya are not better.
This camp opened in December 2018 in Tripoli and is operated under an agreement between the European Union and Libya, aimed at distributing refugees from Libya to Europe in a regular manner or returning them to their countries of origin.
This center is supposed to be a substitute for Libyan detention centers, however, the survey report showed that migrants there are also being subjected to torture.
Several refugees have also report that diseases in this camp are widespread and medical care is lacking.
The report confirmed that criminals come to the center to recruit migrants and push them to work in prostitution and drug dealing.
To reduce the aggravation of the situation in the "gathering and departure" center, the UNHCR which is in charge of this camp is currently seeking to distribute migrants, through the so-called "aid package" system, which is a sum of money offered to those voluntarily leaving the center.
Up until now, the European Union has sent more than 320 million euros to Libya to prevent migrants from reaching Europe, and according to observers, the European Union is counting on a cooperation with a system that infringes human rights.
