On Wednesday, January 29, a general strike took place in all Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, rejecting and denouncing the US president’s announcement of the “Deal of the Century”, which aims at liquidating the Palestinian cause.
Mass rallies were held in all Palestinian refugee camps and communities stressing their right to return to their homes.
The general strike came as a response to the call made by the Palestinian Joint Action Body and the Popular Committees in the Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon.
The call highlighted the need to close of all establishments and shops without any exceptions, and to cause as much mass interactions as possible through the organization of marches and sit-ins.
The Palestinian Joint Action Body and the Popular Committees in the Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon described the American plan as “a sinister shame deal and an episode amongst other American conspiracy episodes against our cause and our people”.
The same statement described the plan as “a rude amendment that comes at the expense of our rights and our national principles”.
The Palestinian Joint Action Body and the Popular Committees stressed the comprehensive national position of the Palestinian people, in rejecting this deal. A press release was issued, and it reads as follows:
“We, together with the entire Palestinian people in Lebanon and according to a comprehensive and unified national position, declare our utmost rejection of this malicious deal that seeks to liquidate the Palestinian cause in favour of the Zionist state. We insist on confronting the deal by all means and measures until it is dropped”.
The press release also stressed the need to adhere to Palestinian national principles and all of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremostly the right to return to the occupied Palestinian territories of 1948.
Both the Body and the Committees noted in their press release that “Confronting this cursed deal and effectively toppling it down is bound to national unity and agreeing upon a comprehensive national project where all means of national Palestinian struggle and resistance would be used”.
In the same press release, both the Body and the Committees also called on for the widest popular Arab and Islamic demonstration. The call included elites and political as well as media figures in order to confront this deal. They also underlined the need for a multi-level Arab and Islamic demonstrations, specifically at the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation levels. The aim of such measure is to take the most adequate steps to match the severity level of the American-Zionist project.
