Lebanon: Minister of Finance accuses banks of "withholding" employee wages

Lebanese Finance Minister Ali Khalil in charge of current affairs has accused banks of ‘withholding’ wages, which is worsening the social tension in the country.

In a post published on his Twitter account, the minister said that the practices of the banks are unacceptable, explaining that these institutions block the salaries of employees transferred, monthly, by the ministry.

Ali Khalil assured that the salaries of the employees are an untouchable sacred right and declared that all the legal procedures will be taken against the banks implied in this affair.

Lebanese banks have imposed a threshold for dollar withdrawals of one thousand dollars per month. Other banks have imposed a weekly threshold of one million pounds ($ 660) despite the fall of the Lebanese national currency in the black market in recent weeks. Tight restrictions have sparked public outrage over banks' denying them wages. In this context, the television channel ‘Sky News Arab’ said that the banks of Tripoli experienced great tensions on Tuesday after several citizens had trouble withdrawing cash.
