Tunisia: 3,845 layoffs in the private sector in 2018

work of the legal committees which enabled the workers to obtain their compensations then 2331 others were illegally dismissed. Statistics have shown that the textile and ready-to-wear sector is the first in terms of layoffs.

The closure of businesses and the fear of losing work caused an increase in protest movements in Tunisia last November where, according to the monthly report monitoring social movements, an increase of 20%, compared to the same month of the year before, was recorded. According to the report, factories threatened with closure or those that have actually closed have caused several workers to protest and cut off national roads to express their anger.

A specialized study, conducted by the Government Agency for the Promotion of Industry and Innovation, (concerning 249 closed companies between 2005 and 2015), revealed that the political and security instability and the weak aid intended for companies are, also, behind the causes of closings.
