Egypt: Workers of 'Smond' protest

Smond workers observed a labor strike to demand the release of delayed bonuses and the application of the minimum wage after the administration committed to resolving all crises once the sale of the sold company’s unexploited land was completed.

The workers, 560 people, began their strike on Saturday, November 31, 2019 to oppose the administration which refused to negotiate on the requests made concerning the premiums of 2017 and the application of the minimum wage decided by the President of the Republic. Faced with the protests, the administration decided to close the company until the holding of the Public Assembly. For his part, the President of the Administrative Council supported the decision to close the day of the beginning of the strike.

For their part, the protesters explained that the administration is trying to reduce the number of workers to only 260 claiming to be unable to provide all the salaries when in reality the administration is trying to prepare the ground for the liquidation of the company.

In this context, the workers explained that the policy of the administration is the main cause behind all the crises through which the company which employed 1300 people passed through recorded important gains.
