Jordan: 'Tamkeen' Center Calls for Removing Barriers to Remedy the Situation of Foreign Workers

The Tamkeen Center for Support called on the Ministry of Labor to find a solution for the obstacles faced by foreign workers so that they can resolve their situation and for the Jordanian labor market to end irregular work.

Meanwhile, Labor Minister Nidhal Battania has decided to extend the deadline for regulating the situation of foreign workers until the end of the current year.

The 'Tamkeen' Center recalled that foreign workers wishing to solve their situation face a number of difficulties and explained that, for example, the administration of domestic workers obliges workers to bring back their former employer to certify, by in writing, that the employee is free, even if the contract has been completed for years.

The center reminded that children of Bengali, Indian and Pakistani nationality are exempt from fines for staying abroad, unlike other foreign children, which is highly discriminatory. In addition, 'Tamkeen' claimed that some employers are mounting false cases against their workers to prevent them from being hired elsewhere and to be able to regulate their situation.

'Tamkeen' also criticized the confiscation of passports by employers, the opacity of closed jobs, the blocking of work permits for those who are not involved in closed jobs and abusive evictions.
