The Kuwait General Federation of Labor called for the abolishment of the Kafala System and for finding alternative solutions for the state and local laws to be the first and only guarantors of the rights of foreign workers.
In an international workshop organized jointly by the Federation and the International Labor Organization (ILO) on the abolishment of the Kafala System, the Federation proposed the creation of an independent labor body. . The General Labor Authority in Kuwait, Human Rights Watch, the Tadaman Center, the Social Work Association and the trade unions of the public and oil workers took part in this workshop.
The Philippine trade union Sandingan, the African Women's Union, the Sudanese Women's League in Kuwait, the Derya League of Sri Lanka, the Sierra Leone Workers 'League in Kuwait, the Indian Workers' Organization of Tamil Nadu, the Al-Buhayrah Children's League in Egypt and the Working Women's Committee of the General Federation of Kuwait Workers also participated in the workshop.
The Federation called for the application of international labor standards (concerning foreign labor) as stipulated in the ILO Conventions and Guidelines. It added that foreign workers in Kuwait have the right to belong to unions.
The Kuwait General Federation of Labor also recommended a tripartite national congress between the government, workers 'representatives and employers' representatives in order to put in place a strategy for good governance of the labor market.
