Jordan: Lafarge Cement Factory dismissed 200 Workers

Last Monday, dozens of workers at the Lafarge cement plant held a protest rally at the Ministry of Labor headquarters after the company dismissed 200 workers.

In this context, the Jordanian Labor Observatory reported that the Ministry of Labor has sent a letter to the President of the Administrative Council of the company explaining that such a dismissal can be applied only following an agreement between the administration and the company’s syndicate.

Ministry correspondence explained that the union demands compensation of at least two and a half wages for every year worked in the factory, to maintain, for life, health insurance for workers registered with social security, compensate workers who have not yet reached the age of early retirement to three wages for each year worked and pay 75% of the social security contribution until the retirement age of work.

The administrative council of the cement factory 'Lafarge' announced in a statement released last Sunday, the decline in the number of its workers (200 workers from different positions. A decision taken after a six-year suspension of activities of the factory at its site based in Fuheis where the company could not use alternative energies despite having obtained all the necessary authorizations for this kind of exploitation.
