Algeria: Workers of the National Office of Watering threaten to have a white agricultural year

Last week, workers and officials of the National Office of Watering, in the municipality of Guelma organized a protest rally in front of the headquarters of the governorate and called on the Minister of Justice to intervene urgently to save the agricultural season.

The protesters called on the authorities to revise the latest decisions issued by the region's Justice Council; decisions that only serve the interests of farmers deprived of irrigation funding.

According to a statement issued by the workers, the verdicts of the City Court of First Instance were favorable to the Office (after the Court dismissed the farmers' complaint) before the City Council decided otherwise for financial compensation.

Workers and officials of the Office have assured that these decisions will impact the budget and the assets of the company that will be indebted which will endanger the entire agricultural season 2020. In these settings, the protesters have called on the Minister of Justice to open an investigation into the farmers' complaint and recalled that the irrigation system has blocked due to major forces (water and electricity cuts and technical breakdowns at the pumps watering).

According to the communiqué, the complainant farmers have no formal contract with the Office, which led the Court of First Instance to dismiss their complaint.

In addition, the protesters threatened to escalate their movements and move towards a white agricultural year if the authorities concerned did not intervene to resolve the situation.
