The Union of Palestinian Journalists called for a protest rally on Wednesday in front of the al-Bireh court group to denounce the verdict of the Ramallah Magistrate's Court regarding the closure of 59 electronic newspapers. The union said the verdict is a crime against freedom of the press, freedom of expression and the Palestinian media.
In a statement, the union explained that this verdict was based on the law number 10 of the year 2018 on electronic crimes. He added that this law represents a threat against journalists and that the fact that it was used by the Court confirms this threat and reflects a clear contradiction with the promise of Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh concerning the protection of freedom of Press.
The Union of Palestinian Journalists has also indicated that the execution of the verdict in question by the Public Prosecutor's Office violates all previous agreements with the union and in this context called on the Supreme Judicial Council to take the necessary measures to revise this verdict. The union appealed to all journalists to unite in the face of this injustice.
