Jordan: UNRWA employees protest

Staff representatives of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) called on the administration of the Office to increase salaries as decided by the staff of the United Nations UNRWA in Syria and Lebanon.

The online newspaper 'Philadelphia News' reported that advice from workers' representatives from all sectors in Jordan was held on October 16, when the administration was asked to pay a wage increase of 200 dinars. The workers' representatives explained that if their request was not implemented, intensive measures would be taken as from November 3.

The agreements between the UNRWA administration and the workers' representatives stipulate that any salary increase for public officials in the host country must be followed by an increase for the Office's teaching. However, Jordanian teachers have just received a wage increase following their last strike, while public health officials have also managed to improve their salaries, which imposes a salary increase for UNRWA employees in Jordan who have had no increase since the year 2012.
