Egypt: Parliament calls for higher bonuses in the private sector

Egyptian parliamentarians have estimated that the Labor Code No. 12 of 2003 and the Civil Service Act stipulate that the annual bonus must be revised every five years on the basis of the basic salary in accordance with Article 40 of the Code. In this context, MPs called on Parliament to intervene so that the private sector pays the premiums of its employees according to the agreement signed on April 11, 2019.

The parliamentarians explained that the private sector does not pay bonuses since 2014 and that this is opposed to the presidential decree which states that public sector bonuses, whether for employees concerned or not by the civil service, must be paid at the rate of 7% of the basic salary (minimum threshold of 75 pounds) and 10% (minimum threshold of 75 pounds) for those not covered by the Civil Service Act.
