Tunisia: Construction workers in Tozeur protest

Construction workers from different regions of the Tozeur governorate organized protests last week to call for the implementation of an agreement signed late last December between the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT) and the government. The agreement concerns formalizing their work contracts in accordance with a predefined schedule.

The agreement stipulated that the formalization of the work contracts of construction workers would begin on March 31, 2019, dividing the workers into groups as was done for the workers of Mechanism 16. However, the government never honored this deadline.

Construction workers have, since the revolution, been responsible for work outside their normal scope including guarding public enterprises and doing administrative tasks without the benefit of either minimum wages or holidays.
