Tunisia- Sidi Bouali: Denied agreement with dairy workers, residents protest

The region of Sidi Bouali, governorate of Sousse, has witnessed great social tension during this week after the dairy plant in the region has disengaged from all its promises.

In its latest issue, the newspaper 'Achaab' reported that the residents of Sidi Bouali have closed all access roads leading to the city and burned the election posters of some presidential candidates. They were confronted by security agents with gas bombs and arrested a number of them.

These protests were provoked by the ongoing crisis of the dairy plant despite the fact that several agreements were signed earlier to end the crisis.

On March 18, the area witnessed a peaceful protest by the factory workers objecting the failure to implement the rescue program of the institution, They were confronted by security agents with tear gas. They also entered the factory by force and fired gas bombs, smashing the car of one of the workers and arresting others.

On April 16, 2019, the residents observed a general strike in support of the workers at the plant after the owner ignored a series of agreements signed between the governorate of Sousse and the Ministry of Industry.

For its part, the union believes that this complicated situation is caused by corruption and mismanagement of the company, all amid the silence of the authorities and concerned bodies and their inaction to save the institution.

The company, which has been active for over 30 years and provides 550 jobs, has experienced a significant increase in its costs mainly due to the deterioration of the local currency according to the views of the Achaab" newspaper."
