The decision of the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord in Libya concerning salary increase of medical professions, has angered many public institutions and triggered demands from other sectors to increase salaries by a high percentage, including oil, education and other sectors .
In a press report, "New Arab" site mentioned that calls for an open- ended sit-in by different parties and sectors have lately started to escalate claiming raise of salaries in many other sectors and equality with workers in the medical professions.
Salaries currently account for 66 per cent of the public expenditure, according to the official data, which shows that the salary item has increased by more than 100 percent since 2010, for which 8 billion dinars have been recorded, to reach 24 billion dinars ($17.1 billion). The number of government employees jumped from 900,000 to 1.85 million, whereas the population amounts to 7.3 million.
The minimum wage is 450 Dinars (321 Dollars) in Libya, and because of the reduction in public spending over the past years, due to austerity policies in 2015, the government suspended periodic salary increases.
The Central Bank of Libya noted earlier this September that total expenses during the last eight months reached 24.9 billion dinars distributed on four chapters, the first chapter consists of 13.8 billion dinars (9.85 billion dollars) for salaries, representing 55% of total expenses, the second chapter for operational and administrative expenses of 4.7 billion Dollars, the third chapter is for developmental projects amounting to 1.5 billion Dinars, and the fourth chapter is for subsidy and amounts to 4.9 billion Dinars.
