Mauritania: The crime of slavery and enslavement committed against a minor

"Mauritania Today" website mentioned that the Mauritanian judicial authorities declared that they have accused 3 persons of committing slavery and enslavement crimes against a minor, and circulating their pictures through social media.

The public prosecution in the capital Nouakchott, revealed that last week " upon receiving reports on the presence of video clips on the social media platforms related to a case of enslavement, launched an investigation and instructed the concerned judicial officers to investigate the reported incidents, to hear the victim, refer the victim to a physician, bring and arrest the suspects, and search for those responsible for publishing the victim's photos through the social media".

According to a statement issued by the Public Prosecutor's Office in the southern province of Nouakchott, "in the light of the search, investigations and hearing of witnesses and the relatives of the victim, the Attorney-General has charged three suspects with the crime of enslavement against a minor by giving her to others and subjecting her to work against money, beating her and treating her Inhumanly".

It is known that Mauritania abolished slavery in 1981 and criminalized it in 2007, as those convicted of slavery since then face up to ten years in prison, and the government says that slavery no longer exists, but still some traces remain in the form of extreme poverty.

Between 2013 and 2015, Mauritania established special courts to deal with slavery and enslavement crimes, a sensitive subject in the country where anti-government associations are active, including the “Initiative pour la Resurgence du Mouvement Abolitioniste" and "S.O.S. esclaves", which the law grants them the right to reveal the perpetrators and follow-up slavery victims.

However, a report by Human Rights Watch in 2018, the World Slavery Index, estimates that there are 90 thousand slaves in Mauritania or 2 percent of the population , including "modern" forms of this practice, such as forced labor or bonded labor.
