Egypt: The contents of the new Social Security Law for Domestic Workers

The Egyptian parliament is expected to pass a new social security and pension law soon for informal sector workers and domestic workers.

The newspaper 'Al Watan', citing statements by a number of parliamentarians that the law will grant wide privileges and new benefits to the categories in question, as the government prepares to pass new legislation for domestic workers, the newspaper said.

The newspaper pointed out that the new insurance law concerns informal workers who will be granted a pension after reaching retirement age, with the availability of an insurance contribution period of not less than 180 months, noting that the law established incentives for motivating employers to insure irregular workers, such as payment of employer's share by the public treasury.

Regarding domestic workers, the newspaper pointed out that the government promised parliament to prepare legislation on domestic workers, so they will not be covered by the new labor law, which is preparing to pass parliament in the coming period.
