Mauritania: National Commission on Human Rights investigates the situation of workers at 'Poly Hondong'

Last week, the National Human Rights Commission initiated an investigation into the situation of the workers at the Chinese company 'Poly Hondong', located in the economic capital Nouadhibou; this is a first for the company that has existed for 7 years. The employees were the victims of repression which occurred in parallel to the visit, but nevertheless they managed to speak with representatives of the Commission.

The 'Aridha' news site reported, citing workers, that the administration harassed and provoked some when they filed long-standing social and professional demands. The dismissed trade unionists claimed, during a meeting held by the Commission before its visit, that the Chinese company does not respect any law, that it makes employees work 24/7, that it has unfairly dismissed on several occasions, and that it is ignoring all judicial verdicts against it.

In the same context, the spokesman for the 105 dismissed workers called on the Commission to do justice to those concerned.
