The Phoenix Center for Economic and Computer Studies sent a letter to the Speaker of the Jordanian Parliament calling for the rejection of the amendments to the Social Security Bill. In its letter, the center called on parliament to approve the amendments strengthening social protection for citizens and families, especially those stipulating that the state cover the costs of gaps in benefits granted to the military and their families via a special fund.
The center also called for the rejection of the government's amendments to the law on the cancellation of early retirement pending the implementation of the battery of parallel policies and measures strengthening social protections and guaranteeing a minimum standard of living for workers and their families. These latter policies are set to be established through unemployment compensation mechanisms (which exists in most countries of the world); with that, workers made redundant at an advanced age will be able to continue to support themselves.
The Phoenix Center for Economic and Computer Studies also called for clear and precise criteria in the Labor Code to combat the unfair dismissal of workers at specific ages (before they reach the retirement age), noting that this phenomenon is widespread in Jordan. The center added that it has become urgent to review salary policies and revise them upwards because employees who retire early usually do so by obligation and because of low pay.
On the other hand, the center expressed its rejection of the amendments which except some companies from social security payments, affirming that business incentives must not harm the social security of the employees and that the government must find of other ways to revive the economy.
