General Federation of Workers’ Trade Unions calls for the linking of education to labor-market reality

Bahrain's General Federation of Trade Unions has called for education to be linked to the reality of the labor market and to a new plan to prioritize the recruitment of young people. In this context, the Federation reminded employers that they were always looking to recruit experienced people, which deprived young Bahrainis of chances of being hiring.

In a statement issued by the Federation on the occasion of World Youth Day, it was revealed that the domestic unemployment rate had reached 4.3% in 2018. According to the latest report – in the instance of social security – the rate of young people between the ages of 20 and 39 who were active in the labor market was 66% in the public sector and 74% in the private sector, or about 100,000 people. Meanwhile, the number of new graduates varied between 6,000 and 8,000 young people annually.

Bahrain's General Federation of Trade Unions noted a significant gap between the number of new graduates and the labor-market recruitment capacity and cited the example of the medical sector where 500 doctors were unemployed (including 150 specialists in homeopathic care). In addition, the Federation pointed out that young workers faced low and unstable wages (because of wage delays) while inflation continued to rise.
