The open sit-in of Tunisian Post employees, held at the Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications4 headquarters in Tunis, has continued for a week.
On the fourth day of the sit-in, security agents tried to dismantle the rally and evacuate protesters from the ministry's headquarters, which led officials and agents of the Post Office to observe a general national strike to denounce police violence.
For its part, the General Federation of Posts, under the umbrella of the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT), assured that this protest was decided after the supervisory authorities ignored the requests of professionals in the sector and they disengaged from the agreements signed between the General Federation and the administration of the Office. The Federation has threatened to step up its movements.
The postal sector's employees have demanded a resolution to the situation facing guards and janitors, the allocation of 2% of the wage for all kinds of promotions in accordance with the agreement of February 16, 2018, and the publication of the results of exams, which has been suspended since December 21, 2018.
The employees’ demands also include completing the negotiations tied to the October 22, 2018 agreement between the union and the government before the end of July 2019. Those negotiations relate to the sustainability of public institutions and the increase in wages for the public sector.
