Morocco: Assa municipality's garbage collectors protest

Assa municipality's garbage collectors organized an open sit-in to claim their July wages and to protest against the city council which has withdrawn from all the social issues already discussed.

In a media statement, Ida Lakhrif, Deputy Secretary-General of the Moroccan Workers' Union, explained that the social file on the day laborers of the municipality requires a serious and responsible negotiation with the mayor and the local authorities. He also called for the institutionalization of social dialogue at local and sectoral levels.

The union official has also revealed that garbage collectors and laborers work in miserable conditions where the standards of occupational safety are absent and he has in this context recalled the death of two garbage collectors, Milkhaf Boujemaa fathers and Mohamed Bahaya. He added that the workers are deprived of social security and family allowances and have been exempted from the last wage increase.

Ida Lakhrif said it is the Moroccan Workers' Union's responsibility to call for a sectoral dialogue with officials of Assa municipality to find a solution to the problems of garbage collectors.
