Lebanon: 'Aluxal' workers protest

Workers at the 'Aluxal' aluminum plant in the city of Choueifat began an open sit-in to protest against 76 unfair layoffs.

'Al Markazia' – the news website – announced the layoffs in May 2019 and reported that workers submitted a formal complaint at the Ministry of Labor and sued the plant administration at Labor Court claiming an indemnity for their period in service (between 15 and 25 years). The claim lodged is calculated based on two-month wages per year of service.

Protesting workers called for their rights or for recovering their jobs after being paid back for their suspension. Protesters rejected any intervention from the security forces to disperse their sit-in, on grounds that this is a purely professional matter, which should be resolved through the Ministries of Labor and Interior, courts and respective municipalities.

Workers appealed on the Minister of Labor to intervene personally, given that the issue concerns as many as 76 workers threatened with impending layoff.
