The head of the International Monetary Fund's delegation, Koshy Mathai, stressed that the payment of the workers’ salaries is at top priority, expressing the IMF’s concern about the humanitarian and economic costs of the conflict, in Yemen.
According to his recent statement, at the end of the meeting that was held between the IMF’s delegation and the Yemeni group in the Jordanian capital, Amman, Koshy Mathai pointed out that the fund works with donors in order to provide the necessary funding for the basic imports. Moreover, it supports the payment of the public sector workers’ wages and provides social assistance.
“The government needs more capacity-building, and donors can provide support at this level in a variety of areas, including the central bank operations, the banking supervision by the central bank, the payment system, and public financial management," said the IMF representative.
The IMF also called for further donor financing, spending restraint by the government and improved revenue collection. In fact, despite the expected increase in oil and gas revenues, the fiscal deficit is likely to remain as it is, in a way that it would be difficult to finance through non-inflationary means.
