Mauritania: Outrage of Kalb Alghin iron miners, following the cut-off of one day from their work

The social situation at the Kalb Alghin mines of the National Company for Industry and Mines (SNIM) in the north of the country is witnessing tension and anger among the workers.

“Al-Akhbar” website revealed that the miners entered in a strike on July 23, in protest against a one-day cut from their work by the company's management.

The protestors, known as Sector 500 workers, who are responsible for the train transporting iron ore from the mine to the export port in Nouadhibou (700 km), confirmed that the company's management had deducted a day from their work.

The workers revealed that they were on their way to their workplaces last Saturday. They took the company’s bus to the mine, where the bus stopped at the exit of the city to get their belongings and then left suddenly.

They added that the bus left, following the head of the authority’s orders, as well as the deduction of one day of work, which led them to strike.

The workers pointed out that they did not know about the deduction until next day, threatening of escalation if the company did not retreat from its unjust decision.

It should be noted that the sector is considered a vital sector in the company, and in case of the continuation of the strike, the iron ore transportation to the port of export will face problems that may lead to its halt.
