Dozens of workers from the “Al Awrach” company organized a protest in front of the company's headquarters in the industrial district of Bab Tiouka in the province of Sidi Kassem, last Thursday. Workers expressed concerned over their future livelihoods in light of the crisis experienced by the company, and gathered under the umbrella of their union, the Moroccan Workers’ Union.
The protestors raised banners and slogans condemning restrictions on trade union work and the arbitrary arrest of trade unionists. In light of the harsh financial and social conditions many are experiencing, workers asked for the payment of salaries, which have been delayed for four months,.
"The workers were surprised by the company’s arbitrary suspension from work, as it was one of best companies at the national level," said Mohamed Maamouri, the company's trade union secretary. In addition, the company’s officials tried to get rid of them instead of sitting with them and have discussions.
Moreover, he called on decision makers in the province of Sidi Kacem to intervene immediately to find an effective solutions to the problems of workers, who "suffer in silence and fear that the situation may worsen, especially as most of them are the only lifeline for their families”; Mr. Maamouri further asserted that "they will resort to multiple forms of escalation, in case the officials continue to ignore them and their demands.”
